Known for paintings and drawings that explore the bodily landscape, Loie Hollowell’s practice exists in the liminal space between abstraction and figuration, otherworldly and corporeal. Originating in autobiography, Hollowell's paintings explore themes of sexuality, often through abstractions of the human body and an emphasis on female forms. With strong colors, varied texture, and the symmetry of sacred geometry, her works evoke bodily landscapes and allude to iconography such as the almond-shaped mandorlas found in medieval religious painting.
Atelier JI was proud to produce the Red Earth 9-layered screen printed edition for Migrate Art and Hollowell in 2021 as part of the Scorched Earth project to raise funds for RefuAid, Refugee Community Kitchen, and The Lotus Flower, who help refugees across the world.
