Odili Donald Odita’s 22 colour screenprint Black Star, printed by Atelier JI, debuted at Art Basel 2024 and is available now from Cristea Roberts Gallery.
After working on his Firewall series last year, we were excited to begin work on another project for Odita and Cristea Roberts Gallery. The Black Star prints featured almost double the number of layers and posed an even greater technical challenge for registration.
Odita’s ‘Black Star’ features 64 triangles that join together at the artwork’s centre, each lining up to create a tidy cross.
Registration was a delicate process. We kept the trapping between the long edges of each triangle to 1 millimetre to ensure the printing technique did not distract from the artwork.
The short edges and acute points of the triangles meet with no overlap or underpin to form the cross at the centre, relying on the accuracy of the printmakers to register all 22 layers with absolute precision and no margin of error.
