The artworks were selected from Myint’s Mother and Child series, which has been ongoing since 2000.
The series employs a distilled black and white palette to evade government censorship of colours thought to be politically charged, and the intertwined figures call upon the universal imagery of a mother’s embrace to honour the loss of his mother as a child.
Mother and Child I, II, and III were printed on a delicate Shan paper hand-crafted by artisans in Myanmar from the bark of the paper mulberry tree. Unable to leave his home country, Myint sourced the paper and entrusted Connecting Myanmar with delivering the paper to the UK, where our Master Printmaker screen printed the edition in our London studio.
The collaboration is a part of Connecting Myanmar and Aung Myint’s collective ongoing efforts to raise funds for the education of children and young people in Myanmar, which is still suffering nearing the 3rd year of a violent military coup.
About Connecting Myanmar
Connecting Myanmar was born out of a 2011 Migrant Outreach Education Initiative that sent students from the University of Hong Kong to teach refugee children at the Thai-Burma border.
In the time since, the organization has been dedicated to connecting students from Myanmar and Hong Kong. Using their strong relationships with local partner organizations, Connecting Myanmar leads a yearly volunteer-led mission to deliver a great number of workshop programmes, including Street qLaw, Journalism Literacy, and Medical Programmes to young people in various Burmese cities and along the border.
In 2017, Connecting Myanmar initiated their Scholarship Scheme for students in Myanmar to attend universities in Southeast Asia. As graduates, these young people hope to contribute to social betterment and improve infrastructure in Myanmar.
